GYMNASTICS

The girls continue to be inspired and motivated by the British Gymnastics Award Scheme, which was re-designed this year to include another level. Once an appropriate skill is chosen, the girls have to work independently to perfect it before presenting it to their teacher for assessment. They work very hard, until they can reproduce the skill perfectly more often than not! They learn to analyse and suggest ways each other can improve, and are most supportive of each other in helping friends develop their repertoire of skills.
This year, the following awards were achieved by the girls: Level 8 – 34 awards; Level 7 – 34 awards; Level 6 - 16 awards; Level 5 – 29 awards; Level 4 – 9 awards; Level 3 – 10 awards: Level 2 – 10 awards and Level 1 – 7 awards. These are added to the awards achieved in previous years to produce an impressive collection of badges, certificates and medals by the DL girls.
Nine Yr 6 girls chose to take the challenge one step further, and successfully completed the Bronze Award for Pairwork - not an easy task, but they worked really hard over the course of the term to reach the required standard to be a base and supported gymnast. Seven of these girls decided to form a group and called themselves the ‘Spring Rolls’. They practised on the Paddock in breaktimes whenever they could, and suddenly presented themselves ‘ready’ for assessment for the Bronze Award for floorwork. They all passed, and it was a joy to see how a small flame has grown into an obsession for the beauty of gymnastics for Laura Barrett, Laura Wilson, Eliza macLachlan, Anna Pitts-Tucker, Annie Cassidy, Maddie Davies and Alex Drewe. Laura W, Alex and Annie then passed the Silver Award for floorwork two days before leaving DL, and Alex became the first girl to perform a ‘free cartwheel’, whilst Annie and Laura left with the ability to perform a supported back flick.
