Thomas Trophy Triumph!
5th October 2015

Another brilliant day of cross country for Somerhill. How refreshing it was to have the sun beating down and clear blue skies for the Thomas Trophy on Friday.

The Derwent Lodge ‘go-faster’ blue striped vests were out in force and what a mighty force they were! The girls whizzed round the course and once again brought home the winners shields for the U9 and U11 girls’ categories.

The U9 team blazed a trail, with Lily Slack taking an early lead and maintaining it all the way round to come home way in front of the rest of the group. Suddenly there was a sea of blue vests as all the other U9 girls came round the field towards the finish very close together. The team results were awesome; the first six girls over the line scored only 46 points, and everyone came home within the top 27!

Lily Slack, 1st Gold Medal. Eva Mathew, 3rd Bronze Medal, Amber Croll 5th, Bella Scott 6th, Niamh Tarry 11th, Nina Mickleburgh 20th, Emily Butler 22nd, Harriet Raven 27th.

A special mention for Amber Croll, who is clearly back on form in her first race after a long time off sport due to injury, and also to Niamh Tarry and Harriet Raven who are both in Year 3, so they performed exceptionally well considering they are a year younger than most runners.

The U11 girls had a tough act to follow – but they did us proud. Once again, the team all came home really close together, with the Year 5 DL girls showing that they are a fabulous group of runners who really challenged many of the older competitors in this race. With a team total of 89 points, the U11 DL girls claimed the top spot and yet another trophy was handed to a Somerhill team!

Sophie Slack 6th, Sara-Luisa Riolo 10th, Mimi Vorster 12th, Mattie Butler 13th, Kitty Muysken 18th, Milly Scott 21st, Darcy Rook 28th, Isla McCulloch 33rd.

Our Yardley Court U9s got us started in fine style with a strong win. Tom Hobbs was our first man home followed by Seamus Hamilton, Liam Kingston, Sam Bromley, Thomas Barry, Oscar Pottle and Ryan Young. A super strong run from our junior boys scoring just 61 points which was half that of second place (less points is better in cross country)!

The U11 boys competition was won by Ollie Croll who ran a very controlled and mature race to hold off two talented boys behind. Next in were the very impressive Marcus Cook, Oshi Hamilton, Charlie Lockhart, Fraser Page, Angus Hall, Felix McArdle-Hodge and Finn Gentry-Potter. Not wanting to be out done by the U9s they finished with 59 points, well ahead of second.

Our U13s had a tougher proposition. With Year 8 on a field trip it was left to the Year 7 boys to do us proud. Fin Croll led us home in 3rd followed by Ethan Page, Seb Tute, Zachary Trengove, Will Press, Tom Dickinson, Edward Leach and Will Hamblett. Up against a predominantly Year 8 field, I was very proud of the effort and determination the Year 7 guys showed.

Thanks to the combined team effort of all 24 Yardley Court boys we retained the Thomas Trophy for the fourth year. Derwent Lodge retained the U9 shield and won back the U11 shield.

Another fantastic performance. Well done boys and girls!
