Cross Country Team wins Thomas Trophy
7th October 2013

The Yardley Court cross country team continued their excellent season with a victory at the Thomas Trophy, held at Sevenoaks Prep, winning the overall trophy and the under 11 shield. On a long, hilly, multi-terrain course, many of our junior runners got their first taste of a 'proper' cross country race, coming second in their age group and gaining valuable experience for the future: Ollie Croll was the first of our runners home, in 6th place, followed by Charlie Lockhart (7th), Freddie Nicholson (10th), Angus Hall (13th), Ollie Grant (29th), Toby Bright (73rd), Harry Leach (82nd) and Albert Whitlock (86th). The best race of the day, from a YC perspective, came from the Under 11s: Year 5 runner Fin Croll valiantly led the field all the way round, until the last 200m, after which the lead changed hands several times; Will Tyler eventually came through from 4th place to win in an amazing sprint for the finish. Fin was 3rd in the end - an outstanding result - closely followed by Oliver Hill (7th), Tom Pitts-Tucker (14th), Matthew Taylor (24th), Theo Daviron (45th), Will Press (52nd) and Seb Tute (45th). With six of those boys still in Year 5, this was a particularly brilliant team performance. Our senior runners know that they inspire the younger athletes, and we can always rely on them to do their best for their school; this event was no exception: Charlie Crick took an impressive victory in the Under 13 race, followed by George Slack (15th), Ewan Wood (20th) Harry Yorke (24th), Miles Christian (35th), Finn Alexander-Birch (38th), Alex Freeman (39th) and Max Irvine (73rd). Those senior boys came a very close second to The Judd School, and this was enough for Yardley Court to win the overall Thomas Trophy for only the fourth time ever.
