School Life
Pupil Voice

Our children have views on big social issues and moral questions, as well as smaller things that affect their everyday lives. We encourage them to express these views constructively, to help influence school life and to take responsibility for bringing about positive change. Our school council provides a forum for pupils to propose ideas, and this is central to decision making at Somerhill. Our Headteachers and their deputies respond to these proposals and consider them in how the school is run. Similarly, our pupils are invited to join a food committee which meets with our Head Chef to discuss catering arrangements.

Even our youngest pupils are given opportunities for making decisions, such as devising classroom rules and then taking responsibility for enforcing them. Not only does this mean children contribute to the smooth running of the school, they are developing their confidence and leadership skills too.
